Dear Members,
While most of us only saw the recent bushfires on the television, some of our members witnessed the devastation first hand in their home towns and a few have been directly affected, losing family, friends and property.
Tragically one of our members, Arthur Enver - a Red Belt at the MTC Kinglake Branch, lost his life attempting to escape the fires and our thoughts are with his family at this time. We are not aware of any other casualties.
There are many agencies currently organising aid and care for the bushfire victims and we would urge all of our members to give generously to the Red Cross to assist with the recovery.
However, there are also some things that we can do within our Taekwondo community;
- If you know of any members of our Association, students, instructors and/or their families who have been directly affected, please e-mail me directly with their details, their club affiliation and a brief description of the extent of the losses they have incurred. Both Taekwondo Victoria and Taekwondo Australia are looking for practical ways that we might be able to assist our members, in addition to what the Red Cross and other agencies are doing. This may include helping re-establish clubs who have lost equipment or helping students replace lost Taekwondo uniforms and equipment. Once we know the full extent of the impact on our members we will be better able to determine how we can help.
- Sport & Recreation Victoria (SRV) are looking for expressions of interest from State Sporting Associations for sending teams into the bushfire camps to run activities for the kids and possibly adults in the coming weeks and months. I already have one team ready to go but will likely need more. Initially SRV were looking for volunteers to start running programs this week but have since advised that many of the communities are just not ready for outsiders as yet. At this early stage I can't give any definite details about where/when these programs may run, or for how long, but if you would like to indicate your availability, please e-mail me directly with the following information:
- Name, Age and Rank
- Working With Children Check details
- Area you live in
- Experience in running childrens / schools type programs
- Contact details - email, phone, mobile, etc.
Please note that if the SRV call on our services, all teams will be going out under the Taekwondo Victoria banner rather than individual club banners. We also need to be sensitive to the clubs who were already operating in these areas and be aware that any new students will be referred back to those existing clubs and instructors.
In times like these, there are no club boundaries and I know that you will all want to help in any way you can.
Thankyou for your support,
Sincerely,
Barry Akehurst

Taekwondo Australia Election Result
TVI would like to congratulate the new President and Executive elected to the Board of Taekwondo Australia on Friday 5the September 2008.
Our new President, Mr Chong Won Lee is the Master Instructor of Lee Taekwondo Chung Do Kwan based at Homebush in Sydney and a long standing member of Taekwondo Australia. A Vice President of Taekwondo NSW since 2006 and well known personally in the halls of Kukkiwon and the WTF, Mr Lee has committed himself to serve the wider Taekwondo community in Australia to strengthen our relationships with these bodies and further cement our place in the Australian sporting community as this country’s peak sporting body for Taekwondo.
Our other councillors elected to the national board include: Victorias own Rod Black, Hassan Iskander, Kate Eggar, Ivan Haschynski, Danny Crkvencic, and Fay Shacklock. They are joined by appointed independent councillor Rob Ferguson and expressions of interest have been called for a further two independent councillors to be appointed in the near future.
Setting the Record Straight
Many of you would be aware that Taekwondo Victoria and Taekwondo Australia have been under persistent attack for most of this year from a small but noisy new opposition organisation who appear to show very little regard for facts or the truth in what they publish on their website. Read more
Athlete Participation Support For AIS Selection Event
As previously advised, 2008 Nationals gold medalists in the 14-17 Black Belt and Open Black Belt Divisions will receive support in attending the October selection event in both poomsae and sparring. The Associations offer of support remains in place and will only apply to gold medalists who actually participate in the selection contest. Qualified athletes will receive a notice in the mail explaining the process for registering their participation details and will need to ensure that they comply with the stipulated closing date so funding processes are not delayed. The level of funding will be determined after the closing date and will be reliant on the number of applications received and the availability of funds for all coming competitions.

Poomsae Seminar By Master Kang
Taekwondo Victoria, was pleased to host Australian Technical Coach , Master Hyung Kook Kang in Melbourne recently.
Over 100 Taekwondo Victoria members took part in the seminar and appreciated the opportunity to refine their skills with the leading Poomsae master. The afternoon session attracted 30 of Victorias leading Head Instructors, keen to avail themselves of the mastery and technical excellence the Taekwondo community have come to see as synonymous with Master Kang. This session focus on how to teach the individual skills required to produce championship level Taekwondo Poomsae athletes.
Both seminars were very well received, with Master Kangs sense of humour a great background for the hard training.
